About this event
Presented by: Dr. Cara Soccorso
About the Webinar: The prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in individuals with Down syndrome (DS) ranges broadly from 5-39%, but the age of diagnosis is significantly later than idiopathic ASD. The overlap of symptoms between intellectual disability and ASD can create diagnostic difficulty for providers for many reasons. Some challenges include decreased awareness of co-occurring DS+ASD, differences in ASD symptomology, and diagnostic overshadowing. Importantly, not all measures used for assessing ASD are normed or validated for children with DS. It is important for clinicians to recognize the signs and symptoms of DS+ASD, to understand the strengths and limitations of available diagnostic tools, and to make appropriate recommendations to help those with DS+ASD make the most effective developmental progress.
